Daikin presents its environmental plan at EHPA Forum

Last month, Daikin presented its environmental strategy to 2050 together with the company’s approach to new opportunities in residential collective heating.

Organised by the European Heat Pump Association and sponsored by Daikin, the two-day event brought together more than 200 professionals to discuss hot topics in the heat pump industry including policies, working towards a low carbon economy and the latest Ecodesign regulations.

Heat pumps: a growth sector

The EHPA recently announced a 12% year on year growth in the European heat pump market for 2018*. Mirroring this success, Daikin Europe’s heating department also returned significant growth, due in no small part to a strong air-to-water heat pump portfolio.

Working towards zero CO2 emissions

At the heart of Daikin’s environmental vision for the future is a commitment to reach zero CO2 emissions by 2050, aimed at delivering a healthier air environment for all while making the company’s business activities carbon neutral.

This strategy is implemented through high efficiency products and services, supported by a switch to innovative low-GWP refrigerant R-32, as well as high performance compressors developed in house.

A further reduction in CO2 emissions is being achieved through innovative new schemes such as the recovery and reclamation of refrigerant for use in new units.

Heat pumps are in Daikin’s DNA. Through the power of air, Daikin creates value based on this freely available resource.

These three activity streams are inter-connected in the drive to achieve zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

A new approach to collective heating

Beyond the targets agreed for reducing CO2 emissions and the current F-gas regulations, there is extensive legislation governing the residential collective heating market. Daikin’s presentation at the EHPA Forum 2019 showcased the company’s latest solutions for this market. These included:

  • For small buildings of up to 10 apartments, a scalable air-to-water heat pump heat pump outdoor unit** in combination with larger tanks located in the basement of the building, offering a space-saving solution in the home.
  • For larger developments of up to 1000 apartments, initial heat generation takes place in the basement, with individual geothermal heat pumps*** in each apartment delivering heating to suit individual householder needs.
